Did you know there is a difference between being nice and being kind?

Often we use the terms nice and kind in the same sentence. We describe people as nice and kind interchangeably. I believe that there is an important difference between the two and that, while it is nice to be nice, it is essential to be kind.

Being nice is when you are polite to people and treat people well. Being kind is when you care about people and show you care. Sometimes you can be kind to someone even though you aren’t nice to them and you can certainly be nice to someone but also be unkind.

I see many people in customer service who are trained to be nice but fail to act kindly. You cannot be taught to be kind. Being kind comes from caring enough for others that you want to do something for them. To me, the world needs more kindness than ever.

We live in a world where we find ourselves battling others over our opinions. In many ways our differences with others are being highlighted. This can, in turn, affect how much we allow ourselves to care about others.

Personally, I have been exposed to some unkind and not nice people lately. They have taken personal feelings and intertwined them with a professional position and enforce their title on others. I have even experienced the act of do as I say, not as I do. How many of you deal with this in life? Since when did it become acceptable to belittle and degrade someone? Ever? And when that person stands up for themselves or, dare I say it, defends themselves it is deemed unacceptable or unprofessional?

This country seems to have become too sensitive and too opinionated. When I was growing up if I dared talk back to my parents or an adult I had to go pick a switch out for the beating that was about to happen. Today, if you even so much as mention the possibility of physically discipling your child, which by the way is called a spanking, 911 is called.

Can’t we all just get along? Be nice. Be kind. Just be! Think before you speak.

Be kind whenever possible, and it’s always possible – Tenjin Ziatso

Never look down on anyone unless you’re helping them up. -Jesse Jackson

Being kind is more important than being right – Andy Rooney

Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” -Mark Twain

You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

I made a Facebook post last week on a healthcare marketing group I’m part of suggesting to people to make it a point every single day to give someone a compliment. We should be doing this anyway. But we don’t.

Tell the person you pass how absolutely beautiful their dress is; how great those statement ear rings look on them; how awesome his project was; how much you appreciated something they just said; how much you appreciate THEM! Pay it forward. Because it’s the right thing to do.
